Towards Darkness

I like painting low key watercolors. I wanted to portray the landscape just before sunset. I think the clouds are a little too dark. I painted this on hot-pressed paper. Will now try it on cold-pressed to see if I get better results.

I tried redoing this on cold pressed paper but it was not successful so I redid it larger on hot pressed paper. I like this one better and Jerry Stitt likes it too. I think the distant mountains have a better shape and the color harmony is better.

Tomales Bay

This is one of the little beaches on Tomales Bay in Marin County, CA. It's not my usual color scheme. I was trying out something different after a demonstration in class on how to paint sand by first putting down raw sienna, then over-glazing with a mix of pale gray made with a mix of cerulean blue and vermilion. Since the sky took up three quarters of the painting, I felt it had to have some drama in it. I think this ended up being too much sky and not enough beach. Need to try it again.
