I just arrived back from a family reunion in Los Angeles. I've always been intrigued by the funky little streets and houses in the area of Laurel Canyon. Most of the canyon houses were built as weekend cottages in the 20's and 30's. The streets are very narrow, windy and twisty in parts and you sometimes have to pull over to let a vehicle coming in the opposite direction pass. They don't appear to have ever been repaved.
I looked up Laurel Canyon on Wikipedia and according to their info "Laurel Canyon has been mentioned in many films and is the subject of a book, Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock and Roll's Legendary Neighborhood. " Many famous people have lived there, including Frank Zappa, Jim Morrison, Errol Flynn, Elliott Cass and George Clooney amongst others. It's a fascinating neighborhood with lots of history. It's dotted with rows of funky mailboxes in different states of deterioration, precariously propped up on wooden posts, at the end of an unpaved pathway or street. The one I painted here was featured in the movie "Laurel Canyon."

My Valentine Peter is in all respects a lovely person and a fine man, except that he is insane about Frank Zappa! When we drive to Florida I have to listen to Frank about half the way--it's not easy listening!
Wonderful painting--love the subject--not something I'd associate with LA!
Happy Valentine's Day!
Thanks Laura
Happy Valentine's day to you too. Not sure I have ever listened to Frank Zappa myself. Maybe I should try.
Charming sketches - and the info helps to picture it.
Laura, I love the story that goes with your paintings! The mailboxes are wonderful...they just screamed to be painted didn't they!
Dave: Thanks for the comment.
Saundra: Thanks Saundra. I think you got me mixed up with Laura, but I agree about the mailboxes.
Sounds like an intriguing place! An area just waiting to be painted! Don't know about Frank Zappa, but George Clooney could do it for me :) I love the letterboxes.
Carol
Agree about George Clooney and according to Wikipedia, he still lives there.
I love this line of mailboxes...always a winner and nicely done.
(The movie is very good, too; hard to miss with Frances McDormand).
Thanks r garriott.
I guess I'm going to have to get the movie out and watch it.
